Cookie notice

The short version: Sheffield Essentials only uses the small files needed to make the site work. No advertising cookies, no tracking, and nothing that follows you to other websites.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a tiny file a website asks your browser to keep, so the site can remember something between visits. Some sites use them to build up a profile of you. We do not.

What we use

  • Keeping you signed in. When you sign in to manage a business page or to reach the staff areas, your browser keeps a sign-in record so you are not asked for your password on every click. It lasts until you sign out.
  • Remembering a staff preference. The menu in the staff areas keeps a small note of whether it was left open or closed, so it stays as you left it. Only staff ever see this.
  • Counting visits. Once per browser session we leave a marker so the same person is not counted twice in the visit total. It is cleared when you close the tab.
  • The “on the site now” figure. Your session is given a random code that lives only while the tab is open. It is never saved to a database and cannot be traced back to you.

What we do not use

  • No advertising cookies, and no sharing of your details with advertisers.
  • No tracking pixels or social media trackers running in the background.
  • No analytics service that builds a profile of you or follows you across other sites.
  • No embedded videos, maps or feeds from other companies that would set their own cookies.

If you click through to someone else

Directory pages link out to Google Maps for a directions view, and our buttons link to Facebook, X and TikTok. The moment you click one of those, you are on their site and their own cookies apply — we cannot speak for them. Their policies are on their own websites.

Your choices

You can clear or block these files in your browser settings, and most browsers will let you block cookies from particular sites. Because ours are all about making the site work, blocking them has simple results: you would not stay signed in to a business page or the staff areas, and the visit total would count you again each time you opened a tab. Reading the news, events and directory would carry on as normal.

Why there is no consent pop-up

The rules ask for permission only for files that are not strictly necessary — advertising and tracking, for example. We use none of those, so there is nothing to ask. If we ever add something optional, such as proper audience measurement, we will put a pop-up up first and update this page.
