Barnsley Council has published a fresh warning over its finances. Its latest quarterly financial report forecasts a £1.5 million overspend on the council's General Fund budget for 2026/27.
Cabinet has asked senior managers to take immediate action to contain spending, accelerate savings and identify further measures to tackle cost pressures.
There is also a major pressure involving the Dedicated Schools Grant, with a forecast deficit of £13.4 million during 2026/27. That could rise to £28 million by the end of 2027/28.
The council says further deterioration in its wider financial position could mean reserves currently earmarked for other priorities have to be used.
