Sheffield City Council is looking to control the rising cost of transport for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The council expects a new transport contract to cost around £13 million a year and run for eight years, with taxis forming a major part of the service. Measures aimed at improving efficiency include increasing independent travel training and the use of personal travel budgets where appropriate. Around 2,600 children and young people across Sheffield are currently supported through the council's home-to-school transport service.
