Green Belt will have to form part of the discussion as Barnsley Council begins work on a new Local Plan, the authority has said.
The council has stressed that this does not mean specific Green Belt sites are being approved today. Instead, it marks the start of what will be a lengthy planning and consultation process.
Early public consultation is currently proposed to begin in January 2027.
The council is targeting adoption of the new Local Plan in September 2029.
The authority has also asked residents what Barnsley should protect above everything else as the borough grows.
