Sheffield City Council says the opening of Event Central on Fargate has been pushed back to 2027 because of work needed to secure a permanent electricity connection.
The council is working with Northern Powergrid and specialist contractors on an alternative solution after changes to the previously agreed power connection.
Officials said trial holes could be dug on Fargate during October as options are investigated, with work designed to minimise the impact on the surrounding area and protect investment already made in the street.
Event Central is being developed as a new events and cultural space in the city centre. The council says a further report will follow once the technical plans, costs and timetable are clearer.
