Owners of banned breed dogs, including XL Bullies, must now ensure that any child under the age of 12 is not left in close contact with their dog without adult supervision.
The new guidance released by DEFRA is an extension of the exemptions of banned breed dogs, meaning if you fail to adhere, your dog will no longer be exempt and could be seized.
Young children, especially those under 12, are at higher risk of dog-related injuries in the home, where incidents often involve a dog that they know. Children may behave in ways that some dogs find uncomfortable and are unable to understand signs of distress or aggression.
Prevention is always best and we welcome any changes that keep children, families and dogs safe. Adult supervision, along with responsible ownership and teaching children about respecting dogs and their spaces can significantly reduce injuries.
The guidance from DEFRA can be read on the Gov UK website.
