Sheffield United say they still do not expect an automatic 12-point deduction as the EFL continues investigating the club's ownership position.
The issue centres on COH Sports Bidco, the company originally used to acquire the club.
Chief executive Stephen Bettis says Sheffield United had already been moved into another holding company before COH Sports Bidco was wound up. The club's legal advice is that the automatic insolvency penalty should therefore not apply.
However, the EFL investigation remains ongoing. Bettis has acknowledged that some form of sanction cannot yet be completely ruled out.
There is also an ongoing dispute involving around £35 million of the takeover price.
