Sheffield United chief executive Stephen Bettis says the money generated from the club's summer player sales will not automatically all be reinvested in new signings.
Around £20 million was raised through the departures of players including Callum O'Hare, Gus Hamer and Andre Brooks.
Bettis said money would be available as United plan for the January transfer window, but stressed that the club also has wider financial demands and infrastructure costs to meet, including work connected with Bramall Lane.
He also revealed that United rejected approaches for young players Sydie Peck and Femi Seriki because the offers did not meet the club's valuations.
