Steelers Book Challenge Cup Semi-Final Place With 5-2 Win Over Storm
Sheffield Steelers secured their place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals with a convincing 5-2 victory over Manchester Storm at the Utilita Arena on Wednesday night.
Aaron Fox’s side effectively did the damage in the opening period, racing into a 4-1 lead through two goals from Ryan Tait, plus strikes from Leevi Teissala and Tim Gettinger.
Manchester threatened a response in the third period, but a disallowed goal proved crucial before Mikko Juusola added Sheffield’s fifth to make sure of the result.
The Steelers went into the game knowing a single point would be enough to guarantee progression, but there was little sign of a cautious approach.
Tait opened the scoring after 4:35, combining with Evan Jasper before finding the net, although initially neither the players nor many supporters appeared certain the puck had crossed the line.
Less than a minute later, Teissala doubled the advantage after reacting quickest to a rebound from a Macoy Erkamps effort.
Storm coach Cameron Critchlow immediately called a timeout in an attempt to halt Sheffield’s momentum, but the home side struck again at 7:30.
Tait carried the puck into the offensive zone before firing into the top corner for his second of the night and a 3-0 lead.
Manchester did find a way back into the contest through Stephen Johnson at 14:07, but the Steelers restored their three-goal advantage before the first intermission.
Gettinger broke down the boards and attempted to find Brandon Whistle in front, only for a deflection to carry the puck into the Storm net at 16:44.
That left Sheffield 4-1 ahead after 20 minutes.
The second period passed without a goal, although both sides created chances and Sheffield remained largely in control.
Manchester reduced the deficit early in the third through Anton Karlsson, whose shot beat Matt Greenfield high to make it 4-2.
There was then a poignant moment in the 47th minute as players, coaches and supporters paid tribute to Adam Johnson, three years after his death.
Storm thought they had made it a one-goal game later in the period, but the Steelers coaching staff challenged the play for offside and the goal was overturned following a video review.
That proved a major moment.
With Manchester needing a win to keep their own hopes alive, Sheffield regained control and Juusola eventually broke clear to score at 55:42.
The Finn’s finish made it 5-2 and effectively confirmed Sheffield’s place in the semi-finals.
Tait was named Steelers’ man of the match after his two-goal performance.
The identity of Sheffield’s semi-final opponents will be decided once the remaining Challenge Cup group fixtures are completed.
