Before anyone arrives on scene, someone has already answered the call.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue says its 999 control room operators take the worst moments of people's lives and turn them into a plan.
They keep a caller calm, get the details right, give life saving advice down the phone, mobilise firefighters and liaise with other agencies, the service says.
The service shared the message in its own words to highlight the work that happens in the control room before crews reach an incident.
